Many people are affected by gum disease due to a lack of regular brushing and flossing. Gum disease can cause serious and lasting damage, even resulting in lost teeth and compromised tissue and bone health. Gum health issues and diseases can be resolved through a variety of different treatments.

Scaling + Root Planning (Deep Cleanings)
Dr. Meden may recommend deep teeth cleaning (also known as dental scaling and root planing) for patients who have been diagnosed with gum disease. This is done to close the gap between the teeth and gums by removing tartar and plaque that has built up in these pockets and, in some cases, down to the roots.
Pocket Antibiotic Treatment
An antibiotic treatment may be applied to your gum pockets to target and fight gum disease. The treatment lasts for ~30 days and is very effective when combined with scaling and root planning (deep cleaning) treatment.
Bone + Tissue Grafts
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone with material from the patient’s own body or an artificial, synthetic, or natural substitute. Bone tissue can regenerate completely and ultimately restores the health of your bone and neighboring teeth.
Tissue grafting deals mostly with the gums and is a common procedure that uses healthy tissue (usually from the top palette) to restore gum health. There are various types of tissue grafting, and the type will depend on your unique situation.
Periodontal Surgery
Periodontal surgery can:
- remove bacteria underneath gums
- reshape the bones that support your teeth
- prevent future gum damage
The type of periodontal surgery you need will be recommended by Dr. Meden based on your specific needs. Sedation dentistry will also be involved to ensure your procedure is painless and comfortable.
Pocket Elimination Surgery
In more severe cases of gum disease, a pocket elimination surgery may be necessary. This is when your dentist will detach the gum off the affected tooth or teeth and perform a thorough cleaning, and then re-attach the gums.
Periodontal Laser Treatment
Dr. Meden is trained in laser dentistry which allows for faster recovery times, less pain and post-surgical bleeding, and often does not require anesthesia. Laser therapy also works in combination with traditional therapies.
When receiving periodontal laser treatment, Dr. Meden will use a laser to access and remove the inflamed gum tissue from around your tooth’s root, then remove tartar and plaque that has built up around the gums. This procedure treats the problem while also preventing it from reoccurring in the future.
PREVENTING GUM DISEASE
The most effective way to prevent gum disease is to both floss and brush regularly. Doing so removes harmful plaque and bacteria, and keeps gums healthy. You should also visit your dentist every 6 months for routine cleanings and check-ups.
Periodontal disease can cause serious health concerns if not properly treated, so addressing concerns as early as possible is important. If you notice gum recession, gum bleeding, or swollen gums, it may be good to schedule an appointment.
