We have lots of patients that ask us if porcelain veneers are too good to be true. Even though, porcelain veneers aren’t perfect and they do have their drawbacks, the upsides far exceed the downsides.
Strong and very durable, veneers last from ten to fifteen years, and come in colors that will brighten dark teeth without the worry of them changing color, because porcelain veneers are very stain resistant. Veneers are typically done in a few one and a half hour-long appointments, meaning you get your brand new smile fast.
Another great thing about porcelain veneers is that they don’t require any additional maintenance. After you complete the procedure, you’ll have a follow up appointment with your dentist to ensure that your teeth are healthy and the procedure was completed properly. Once you’ve had the follow up appointment, you just have to take care of them like your normal teeth by brushing and flossing regularly.
It may take a week or two to get used to your new smile. Normally, very little natural tooth is removed, but there are situations where more tooth must be removed, which increases the risk of trauma to the tooth. If the prospect of having some of your tooth removed, speak to your dentist about your concerns.
Occasionally, some patients have minor sensitivity after your teeth have been prepared for your veneers while wearing the temporary veneers. The reality is that veneers work very well but are not perfect replacements for natural teeth. Furthermore, it’s not uncommon to see slight variations in the color of veneers upon very close inspection, but this is no different than our natural teeth.
Ultimately, if you’d like to revamp your smile, porcelain veneers are a great option, even though there may be a few minor drawbacks. Generally, our patients report being extremely pleased with the results. If you’d like more information about porcelain veneers, contact us today.
